Communications Specialist (Internal)

Department: Communications
Location: IU / Philadelphia, Boston, Washington DC area, Detroit, Baltimore
Bargaining Unit: UUHS – Level 2
Reports to: Director of Communications
Salary: $48,000

Summary

UNITE HERE is a progressive labor union, dedicated to creating greater equality and opportunity to workers in the North American hospitality industry. As a Communications Specialist with UNITE HERE, you will play a crucial role in designing comprehensive communications strategies using digital platforms and print media to support worker organizing efforts and to elevate the work of both the International Union and local campaigns. You will be part of a team that empowers people in low-wage service sector jobs to achieve better wages and benefits, dignity, and basic rights at work.

Job Responsibilities (including but not limited to)

• Manage the union’s internal email newsletter and texting programs, including collecting content, writing copy, and sending;
• Developing, in collaboration with local union leadership, messaging and materials for effective worker-targeted communication with local union members and workers participating in organizing campaigns;
• Provide support for local unions, including advising on how to set up their own internal communications program and consulting and training on practical and strategic use multimedia tools;
• Consult on/manage texting and other worker-targeted communications for major union programs and campaigns;
• Assist in maintaining photo archives.

Job Requirements / Qualifications

• Demonstrated commitment to social justice and the fight for workers’ rights;
• BA degree or relevant work experience, with a minimum of three years in campaign communications;
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the capacity to meaningfully engage with and frame issues for people of different backgrounds, races, ethnicities, income levels, life experiences, etc.;
• Experience using with Action Network, Mobile Commons, Hustle, Slack and/or other digital communications software/platforms;
• Ability and willingness to travel and work occasional long- or irregular hours during times of critical campaign need;
• Ability to effectively manage a workload with competing priorities and deadlines;
• Energetic self-starter with good interpersonal and collaborative teamwork skills;
• Fluency in Spanish a plus;
