Summary:
UNITE HERE's Digital Communications Specialist will play a crucial role in designing comprehensive communications strategies using digital platforms to raise the visibility of worker struggles. As a Digital Communications Specialist with UNITE HERE, you will be embedded in live worker campaigns on the ground, helping workers in low-wage service sector jobs to achieve better wages and benefits, dignity and basic rights at work. UNITE HERE's Digital Communications Specialist will be responsible for supporting all aspects of UNITE HERE's social media program, aiding in the development and implementation of communications strategies across online platforms for the international union and local campaigns.

Job responsibilities (include but are not limited to):

  • Develop content for and manage UNITE HERE's social media feeds on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and more.
  • Assist in content creation for UNITE HERE websites, online campaigns, email messaging, and social media.
  • Plan and implement training programs to increase union capacity in social media: both basic skills training and strategic campaign work in consultation with campaign staff. This includes leading a team of 200+ online activists who are part of UNITE HERE's "Digital Ninja" program.
  • Develop relationships with and move content to online activists/bloggers. Maintain new media outreach lists.
  • Participate in local campaigns as appropriate, helping craft strategy and message as it applies to social media.
  • Strategize ad creation and placement for strategic campaigns and high-performing content.
  • Manage the international union's e-mail and texting database; implement mass texting and emails campaigns using Salsa /Action Network and Mobile Commons.
  • Work to ensure that supporters are integrated across Twitter, Facebook, and email.
  • Assist in maintaining online photo archives.
  • Compile web, email, social networking analytics into reports.
  • Other related duties to support department objectives.

Job Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Minimum of one year experience working in digital communications
  • A strong portfolio of original online content with a proven track record of engagement
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and prior work experience with grassroots advocacy campaigns
  • Experience using Salsa, Mobile Commons or other bulk e-mail/texting services
  • Energetic self-starter with good interpersonal and collaborative teamwork skills
  • Proven ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and projects in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Strong design/photography or videography skills a plus
  • Fluency in Spanish a plus
