Controller
The Controller will work collaboratively with the Director of Finance and the Office of the Secretary-Treasurer to manage the financial operations of our organization. You will help generate innovative and ongoing improvements to core processes and lead a team of financial staff. You will provide leadership and expertise to maintain a cutting-edge team as we advance our mission on behalf of hospitality workers in the United States and Canada.
As Controller, you will:
- Lead a team of staff to accomplish day-to-day financial operations.
- Oversee the preparation and analysis of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and UNITE HERE policies.
- Develop and implement internal control policies and procedures to safeguard company assets and ensure accurate reporting.
- Assist Director with compliance with all regulatory agencies (including but not limited to the IRS and Department of Labor); manage related audits.
- Assist Director and Secretary-Treasurer with preparing annual budgets.
- Monitor daily cash flows.
- Prepare financial reports, analyze accounting data, and make proactive recommendations.
- Work with the Director of Finance and Secretary-Treasurer on staff development, performance evaluations, training, continuing education, and fostering a collaborative work environment.
- Travel occasionally.
- Perform other duties as determined by Director and Secretary-Treasurer.
Required qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance (Master’s degree or CPA preferred).
- Minimum of 5–7 years of progressively responsible experience in accounting, with at least 3 years in a managerial or supervisory role.
- Proven proficiency in the following areas:
- Generally accepted accounting principles, concepts, processes, and internal controls.
- Microsoft Office, including advanced Excel skills.
- Regulatory reporting requirements of IRS and DOL (e.g. 990s, 1099s, LM-2, etc.).
- Digital workflow technologies.
- Compliance requirements of 401k plans, workers’ compensation, defined benefit pensions and financial audits.
- Strong supervisory, leadership, and team-building skills.
- Strong leadership abilities, with experience managing and developing a team.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Exceptional analytical and problem-solving skills.
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience with Intacct financial management system and ADP Workforce.
- Non-profit experience (especially labor unions).
- Connection with UNITE HERE mission.
- Previous experience in a Controller or similar senior accounting role.

Salary: $110,000, or commensurate with experience.
