Thank you for your interest in working with UNITE HERE.UNITE HERE Local 23 in Atlanta is a growing local union with a diverse membership working low-wage hospitality positions in hotel and airport jobs. We are seeking an experienced and committed Organizing Director. Local 23 is a UNITE HERE affiliate representing hospitality workers in 9 states and the District of Columbia.
Position Objective: Lead and strengthen the local through developing organizing staff and developing shop-level and local-wide strategy to build power for low-wage workers in the Atlanta area.
Responsibilities include:
- In conjunction with Local 23 National Organizing Director, develop organizing plan for the local in Atlanta;
- Develop staff work plans (in conjunction with staff) to further the organizing goals of the local in Atlanta;
- Develop and conduct on-going staff trainings in Atlanta and participate in the development of trainings local-wide;
- Participate as a member of the national leadership team of Local 23;
- Evaluate all organizing leads in accordance with UNITE HERE policy;
- Direct and train the organizing staff to do the following: build and maintain worker committees through building relationships with and between members; organize and lead worker committee meetings; organize and lead shop steward trainings; train shop leaders to organize around workplace issues; handle grievances effectively, and train members to address grievances;
- Organize and run large actions such as picket lines and civil disobedience;
- Perform administrative tasks necessary for worker organizing such as maintaining database, producing materials and correspondence;
- Work with labor and community allies to engage in and strengthen the movement of workers in the Atlanta area.
Minimum Qualifications: Five years’ of experience as a labor or community organizer. Must have significant supervisory experience, including leadership and training of staff and potential members.

- Demonstrated dedication to building a strong labor movement;
- Experience in organizing others, building unity among diverse groups and mobilizing others to take action;
- Experience with internal organizing generally, and specifically, with handling grievances in a way that builds member solidarity and power within and between workplaces;
- Ability to carry out goals and meet timelines, demonstrating a high level of leadership and independent judgment within the context of an overall plan and structure;
- Strong communication skills in one-on-one and group settings;
- Ability to work with team of leaders and organizers to build the movement;
- Strong language skills in a language other than English; Spanish specifically needed;
- Valid driver's license and own car;
- Ability to travel within and outside of Georgia for extended periods of time;
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
