Summary:
The Assistant Communications Director will be responsible for managing various communications processes and products for UNITE HERE. Areas of responsibility include internal communications, online communications, campaign strategy, message development, brand development, event production, and materials (including video) development/ production/ distribution strategies. He/ she will assist in the development of the union’s communications campaigns for internal and external audiences, and on behalf of union locals when appropriate. He/ she will also regularly manage the work of other Communications Department staff and collaborate with Communications Director to develop training programs for growing strategic communications capacity unionwide. He/ she will make recommendations to the Communications Director as well as division leaders regarding various communications campaign components.
Job Responsibilities (include but are not limited to):
• Oversee content development and strategy for communications vehicles, such as press deliverables, websites, newsletters, videos and other media platforms.
• Develop and implement internal and member communications solutions.
• Lead communications staff in developing and executing strategic campaigns and union communications programs.
• Provide ongoing analysis and monitoring of online strategy for campaigns, including recommendations for related outreach.
• Work with local union leaders to support communications and campaigns.
• Work with Director and other union staff on media strategies and materials, including writing for the media.
• Develop creative plans for rolling out campaign communications to all targets.
• Work with Director to develop training programs for Communications staff and affiliates.
• Perform related duties as assigned.
Job Requirements/Qualifications:
• 3 – 4 years of managerial experience with staff and/or consultants.
• 4+ years of relevant communications experience.
• Excellent communications skills (written and verbal).
• Proven experience in managing communications campaigns.
• Knowledge of standard communications vehicles, particularly online and new media.
• Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite software preferred (not required).
• Ability to work well under pressure and handle multiple tasks and deadlines.
• Commitment to labor movement.
• Travel required. Anywhere between 15-70% of days in work weeks monthly.
