Thank you for your interest in working with UNITE HERE.UNITE HERE Local 23 in Washington, DC is a growing local union with a diverse membership working hospitality positions in stadium, food production, food service and airport jobs. We are seeking a passionate Immigration Coordinator who believes deeply in the labor movement and wants to engage African immigrant workers, primarily from Ethiopia and Eritrea, to take their Union to the next level. Local 23 is a UNITE HERE affiliate representing hospitality workers in 9 states and the District of Columbia.
Position Objective: Provide information and connect workers and their families to resources for assistance for citizenship, DAPA/DACA prep. This is a short term position that could grow into a long term position.
Responsibilities include:
- Develop partnerships with community groups and immigrant rights advocates;
- Organize and conduct immigration information clinics and information sessions;
- Survey workers to assess needs;
- Recruit and train volunteers to help carry out program;
- Manage and maintain database;
- Develop, write and produce written materials to support the program;
- Perform administrative tasks necessary for worker organizing such as maintaining database, producing materials and correspondence;
- Work with labor and community allies to engage in and strengthen the movement of workers in the Washington, D.C. region.
Desired Qualifications:
- Dedication to building a strong labor movement;
- Willingness to work long and irregular hours
- Experience in organizing others, building unity among diverse groups and mobilizing others to take action;
- Experience with internal organizing generally, and specifically, with handling grievances in a way that builds member solidarity and power within and between workplaces;
- Ability to carry out goals and meet timelines, while demonstrating a high level of proven leadership and independent judgment within the context of an overall plan and structure;
- Strong communication skills in one-on-one and group settings;
- Ability to work with team of leaders and organizers to build the movement;
- Organizational and administrative skills as well as basic computer skills;
- Valid driver's license and own car.
